Last night as I was lazily scrolling through my Twitter news feed while in bed, I found myself coming across numerous posts and pictures of celebrities from the Met Gala. Of course, I’ve heard of the Met Gala; I remember pictures from previous years. But I had no idea what the Met Gala actually was. So I decided to do some research, and I was very intrigued.
WHAT IS THE MET GALA?
The Met Gala is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Costume Institute in New York City. It serves as an opening celebration for the Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. It is one of the most exclusive social events in New York and one of the biggest fundraising nights in the city. ($12 Million was raised in 2014!) Vogue Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour, oversees the benefit committee and guest list. It’s extremely exclusive; the annual guest list inclues only 650-700 people.
Each year, the Met Gala has a “theme”. The theme sets the tone for the exhibit, and the guests are encouraged to dress accordingly. This years theme was Rei Kawakubo/Commes des Garcons: Art of the In-Between. I’m no fashion guru, and I had no idea what that meant. So I did some research.
MET GALA 2017: THEME
Rei Kawakubo is a Japanese Fashion Designer, and the founder of Commes des Garcons. Commes de Garcons is French for “Like some boys.” As of this May, Rei Kawakubo is the subject of one of the exhibitions of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Fashion Exhibits in NYC. (Once I looked up this fashion, many wardrobe choices that some celebrities had chosen made so much more sense to me.)
Here are some of Rei Kawakubo’s looks:
These looks are….interesting? To say the least. Once I understood this theme, however, I was super interested in what each celebrity wore. Of course, some didn’t go with the theme at all, but still looked gorgeous. Others decided to be bold and went with the theme – some of them really slayed, and others, not so much. Let’s see….
BEST DRESSED:
Rihanna
Rihanna never fails us fashion wise. Clearly she stuck with the theme, and she absolutely killed it. Queen.
Emma Roberts
Simple, yet elegant and posh. So gorgeous.
Selena Gomez
Simple, pretty, theme inspired. She’s glowing.
Lily Rose Depp
That bright pink is perfect – she is stunning.
Zendaya
I’m pretty sure this look speaks for itself. Amazing.
Kim Kardashian
Some call this look plain, I think she looks magnificent. Not everyone looks fabulous in white, but Kim looks absolutely flawless.
Hailey Baldwin
She looks like a Princess. Beautiful.
Ashley Graham
I love Ashley Graham. She followed the theme, looks gorgeous, and is defying all stereotypes for what is considered sexy. Beautiful and Inspiring.
Nick Jonas
I clearly discriminated against males in this category, but I really didn’t find any guy besides Nick Jonas who I thought deserved to be mentioned. He’s looking good!
HOTTEST COUPLES:
Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds
Swoon…..
Tom Brady & Gisele Bundchen
Maybe I’m biased because Tom is the GOAT, but they look pretty damn good.
Mary Kate & Ashley Olson
Maybe not a couple, but such an iconic duo. I love their boho chic look.
Of course, there were many looks that I found to be truly bizarre, which is bound to happen at any event. Some looks that I “didn’t care for” (that’s really putting it mildly)….
FASHION FAILS
Katy Perry
I’m not crazy about Katy Perry in general, but when she looks good I will 100 % give her credit. I hate everything about this look. I just feel like she tries so hard to be unique. Give it a rest.
Madonna
There are no words for this. WHY?
Celine Dion
I’m just genuinely confused.
Kendall Jenner
So, when I saw the front of Kendall’s dress, she was originally a fav. I thought she looked so pretty. Then I saw the back. And it ruined everything. So trashy.
Halle Berry
Halle Berry is so gorgeous – she could pull off practically any look. Why she chose this, though, is beyond me.
Bella Hadid
I’m typically a fan of Bella’s fashion. I’m just really not feeling the cat suit. She’s stunning, she could have chosen a much prettier, and classier, look.
Jaden Smith
I should have put Jaden as my first Fashion Fail. Seriously, WHY ARE YOU CARRYING AROUND YOUR CHOPPED OFF DREADS!? Beyond creepy.
That’s it for now! Until next year….
